April 1, 2014
April blew in bringing with it signs of Spring here at Pecos River Cabins. Blooming daffodils, grape hyacinths, and tulips are adorning the gardens. The lawn is greening up along with the columbine, iris, and daisies. The crocus are nearly finished and the fruit trees are holding back, thankfully. There will be another frost before winter is finished with us for the year.
Early April marks the return of the hummingbirds. I usually hear the early arrivals before I see them. The Broad Tail’s distinct sound made in flight reminds me of a squeaky ball bearing. Others say the sound is more of a cricket-like whistle. However it is described you know when they have returned! No sign yet, but the first feeder is up and filled.
The river is clear and running nicely. The high water from last September’s heavy rain cleared the ash deposited by the fires. I have not yet dropped a line in the water, but a nice pan size trout was caught by a guest at Cowles pond last weekend.
Stay tuned for future postings from Pecos River Cabins.
